Anyone who owns a printer knows that printer ink cartridges are not exactly cheap items to buy on a regular basis. In fact, there are some people out there who would rather buy a new printer rather than a set of new printer ink cartridges simply because they think it is cheaper to do so.
Of course, resorting to buying a new printer rather than replacing printer ink cartridges every time you run out is not only silly but can also be totally wasteful. Instead of doing so, it would be better for you to find ways to extend the life of your printer ink cartridge so you would be able to use it much longer. Here are a few tips that will help you save money on printer ink cartridges for your printer.
1. Print sparingly. Before you print a document, you should ask yourself if you really need to have it printed. If you are going to print a document just for the sake of seeing how it looks like on paper but without really using it, you are better off not doing it at all. Also, check if you really need all those elements in the document the colored images, the wide spaces, et cetera. You can set your printer up so it would only print the text, without including the images.
2. Print regularly. If you think that leaving your printer unused is going to help you save on the cost of printer ink cartridges, think again. Your ink is going to dry up in the cartridge, and dried up printer ink can clog your printer head. If your printer head gets clogged, not only will the print quality of your printer suffer, but the printer head can also end up damaged. Just a test print once a week will do if you are not using your printer frequently.
3. Preview your documents. It goes without saying that it is a total waste of printer ink if you print out a document and then discover that there is something wrong with it, like a typographical error or an image that is not aligned or cropped properly. To avoid such wastage, use the print preview function in your printing software.
4. Make draft-quality prints. Do you really need that document to look all bright and glossy If you are not making the printout so that you can give it to someone you need to impress visually, then you can tone down the quality of the printout and use draft quality instead. In this way, the amount of printer ink used in creating the batch print will be minimal.
5. Unplug your printer when you are not using it. When you are not using your printer, power it down properly and pull its power plug from the wall socket. The continuous heat from the electricity feeding the printer can cause the printer ink to clog up the printer head. A clogged up printer head is nobodys friend, and it will also make your printer ink cartridge used up before its time.
